Our December Sojourn Spotlight shines on our L.P.N, Maryalice Redwing. Maryalice is not new to Sojourn. This month she is celebrating her 24th year with us! We are blessed to have her on our team; she is loved and respected by all who know her.
Maryalice is what we call a local. She graduated from Mound Westonka high school before moving on to what was then, Glenwood Hills Hospital in Golden Valley, where she worked to earn her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree.
Maryalice grew up around healthcare. Her Grandmother, Alice Westlund started caring for elderly friends & neighbors in her home before founding Twin Birch Nursing Home (known today as Presbyterian Homes) right here in Spring Park. When asked, Maryalice says she’s always been a people person. She did veer off for a couple of years working a few part-time jobs outside of the healthcare industry, but realized quickly her calling was caring for others. It was about this time that Maryalice became aware of a woman doing what her Grandmother had done so many years ago. The woman was Sally Hebson and her company was named Sojourn.
Through the years Maryalice has watched Sojourn grow from a small group of mostly elderly clients to a wonderful mix of people from all ages, some with disabilities. When asked what she loves most about Sojourn, Maryalice is quick to reply, “It’s watching the positive affect we have on each client.” She also speaks highly of Sojourn’s bi-monthly Caregivers Support Group that meets over lunch at the church across the street. Maryalice and our social worker, Julia Spranger co-host the group that has been a God send to many. She loves the fact that she can work with not only the clients, but also get to know the caregivers as well.
When Maryalice is not at work doing nursing assessments, or administering her luxury pedicures, she finds plenty to keep herself busy. She and her husband Virgil, just celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this past summer. She says they love spending time with their son & daughter-in-law who live in Apple Valley along with their four grand dogs (all Shih Tzu’s). And yes, they even nurture an abandoned Guinea pig they named “Squeaky” that showed up at their back door last year! Maryalice also loves to bake; especially her Scandinavian Christmas cookies this time of year.
